“On This Day” a painting of a new era.

I have been working on a series of dawn, paintings created at dawn on location for many years. While the failure rate is significant because it is so difficult to do I kept doing it. I asked myself why it is that I am doing this. Part of it was to capture what I saw and to share it, as usual. But the challenge was also part of it. I wanted to conquer it and make a difficult subject show itself to the world at its most beautiful (in my opinion) But then I heard this phrase. “The choices you’ve made that brought you to this day.” 

“You get another chance “To do better and be better. To become more of who you are and what you were created to fulfill.”

Abstract Plein Air Sketch, Submerged Rock, by Deborah Chapin

“Submerged Rock” is an abstract plein air sketch.

You stand back from it and squint to see the patterns come together.  It is like a play on abstract shapes and patterns of color and light to form the subject on site.   This particular instance was the capture of the violets and orchre tones in the puddles of water left by the waves as it hit on the rocks at low tide.   I love these water spouts. I also love the abstraction of patterns in color and line as well as movement which all play together as a whole and compose the rocks and the sea.   These Sketches like, “Submerged Rock” are part of my dawn paintings in search of learning this particular section of the Pemaquid coast.  Since last January’s storm rocks are missing and the coast has changed significantly, but … New things come out of it too.  This is what you learn each year.    One of the things the plein air painter does is capture the moment which will never be the same.  Our coastal environment changes constantly.  Treasure it.
