Maine Coast Art painting “White Horses of the Sea I" at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, is original art, a Maine art piece inspired by the poem “White Horses of the Sea” by Elfin. (See Poem below). So started me thinking what a great large painting it could be. So, I’m doing a series of small pieces seeing if I can pull it off in paint, make it look realistic and yet also show those foamy steeds. This the first one.

White Horses of the Sea by Elfin
A thousand horses, wild and free
like waves that follow o'er the sea,
heaven is high, the sea is wide
their arching necks aloft with pride.
The great white breakers gave them birth
they hear no voice, they touch no earth,
oh what a sight these flying steed
who challenge all the winds for speed.
Bare-backed white horses heave and throw
their salty tongues flick to and fro,
they rear and toss the foaming tide
brushed by heaven with every ride,
They dance and toss their rippled manes
shining and soft as silken skeins,
gallpoping hooves no blacksmith shod
and flanks unscarred by spur or rod.
There is no earthly breed to beat,
these spray-curled racers, fast and fleet,
who breathe the foam yet never sleep
white crested fillies of the deep.
Extraction of Lord Byron's poem of Mazeppa's Ride

About the Process
I like to paint several smaller paintings, working myself up to larger work, as I learn the subject matter. Gradually developing a portfolio which expresses the full character of the place. Pemaquid Point is no different to than one of my favorite haunts in France. It must be explored and appreciated and allowed to seep in at it’s own pace. I am not a slam bam thank you…. kind of artist. I think of speed as antithetical to art. I think deeply and like to delve into the nature of the place, learning the nooks and crannies and developing a deep appreciation of its beauty. Instant gratification is not my thing. I have never been someone who thought a cursory look at someplace even counted as having seen something, even as a tourist. I went back many times, and stayed during long visits of a month or more exploring the culture, the history and the people of a place. This series of plein air and studio paintings are new work added to an already extensive portfolio of 40 years of art.
