Surf Painting, Fine Art, Beach Scene, Canvas Print “Blue Indigo” by Deborah Chapin

From the Log, presentation at the Smithsonian American Art Museum:

Now, I know that it is said that only mad dogs and Englishmen will challenge the worst elements of Nature. However, it is the American Woman, that setup an easel with a 21″ x 34″ canvas, in 50 mph winds. I was well aware that it was absolutely out of the question to backpack into a location with a gale. I was envious of Corot’s bulky build at that moment (not before or since). I also knew (from experience) that I would need to be creative to keep my easel from disintegrating into a pile of toothpicks. It was obvious there would be a limited time to accomplish the work because a storm was rolling in. Also, this was a one time shot, the odds that I would see this combination of elements again made it unlikely that I would have two days to work on this piece. When I spied a spectacular surf in sea foam greens pounding into a wall of pebbles; clouds of dark blues, and a spit of land shrouded in deep purples and ochres I knew that I had a subject for a painting. Perfect, now I knew what I wanted to paint and all that remained was the how. I put the nose of my Renault (clearly not available to Gauguin in his travels) into the wind. I opened up the hatchback, attached my easel to the hook lock with leather straps and forcefully installed my canvas upon the tray of the easel. With one hand holding onto my canvas I managed a piece, nearing completion, by the time the elements were unfavorable. I made a point of keeping the composition simple and working on the light and mood of the subject. As I was working I noticed the point of land starting to disappear. This was my signal time was up, that was the rain.

Presented in Sea and Surf en plein air at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

Blue Indigo original painting was painted on location in Brittany.   Blue Indigo, one of my premiere pieces from my 7 years in France is now available in a Limited edition Archival Print.  Blue Indigo was part of the talk on plein air painting video that I presented at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and part of the exhibition Auction at the Ketterer Kunst Exhibition of 16-20th Century Exhibition in Hamburg Germany.  I am currently working on a digital version of the talk at the SAAM video where I describe how this piece was created and the unusual feature of the original because of the elements.

About the Brittany Paintings:  I painted 7 years in France from 1991-1998  I had continuous showings of these works each year as well as work from other locations in France during this period.   I loved the Brittany coast and in particular the rugged surf and coastal pieces but also the tranquil nature of peace and rest associated with various regions.  In painting over 150 original oil paintings which included abstract marines, coastals,  harbor scenes, sandy beach paintings I also painted a significant number of scenes with people, houses and local life.
