[National Academy of Plein Air Painters members trip to see Sorolla]
article and pictures by Glen Knowles – designed and edited by Deborah Chapin
The closed (now open) Sorolla gallery was a banquet of his work. Some of the highlights for us were: His famous 1911 outdoor portrait of Louis Comfort Tiffany. This was Constancio’s favorite as he felt it represented Sorolla’s peak painting skills, just as he embarked upon his great mural project. Constancio further told us the painting was set in Tiffany’s front yard (overlooking the Long Island Coast). It would be hard to argue with his assertions when one looked closely at the brush handling of glowing impressionist like flowers in open shade.
