[National Academy of Plein Air Painters members trip to see Sorolla]
article and pictures by Glen Knowles – designed and edited by Deborah Chapin

We felt instantly like we were being drawn into the center of a vortex. A vortex of the Spanish people, adorned in the colors of their regional costumes, and bathed in that glorious afternoon summer sunlight of Spain. One can almost hear a guitar strumming, the buenos noches of evening greetings, the whispering of women and the trampling of hoofs! Somehow Sorolla miraculously captures these people’s pride, dignity and pleasure in living. His signature way of painting, often referred to as Sorollism, contains brilliant light and a fluid freshness, some passages of under painting showing through.
