Deborah Chapin, bio - updated May 2009

Growing up in Colorado and Montana, Chapin fell in love with nature and came to appreciate it at an early age.

The result of these experiences culminated in plein air paintings of water and water related subjects. She considers her professional career of painting began in 1980. Living in Maryland since 1978, she started with the one-design boating on the Chesapeake Bay. Depicting water and water related subject not only appeals to her artistic nature but her desire to cherish this most precious and least appreciated resource. Her work has come to full circle as a mature artist painting watery landscapes of all types.

Deborah Chapin’s ability to capture the water’s essence is reflected in her 28-year career. As an accomplished marine artist her work was selected as the 20th century representative (September 2000) the Ketterer Kunst Marine Art Auction (Hamburg). De Beer’s monograph on Ludolf Backhuysen [National Gallery of Art, 2004] compares her active water scenes with the 17th century Dutch painter. As an accomplished plein air painter, she depicts wetlands, waterways, and grasslands as well as ocean waters. Recently her wetland grasses won the Grand Prize at the Paint America Competition ,  have exhibited at Southeastern Wildlife Exhibition ,  the
CM Russell Auction 2007 , the Mystic Seaport International  and video/talks on plein air painting "Educating the Eye" begun at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
